Welcome to My Blog!
My name is Jodie and this blog was created to provide you with information about myself and my journey in the next few months in ENGL 301 as I develop and improve my technical and professional writing skills.
ENGL 301 is an online course offered at the University of British Columbia (UBC). This course aims to improve students’ technical, business and professional writing skills. Geared towards 3rd and 4th year students, this course prepares students for future volunteer, Co-op programs, graduate studies, and career opportunities by providing students with information and ample opportunities to practice different digital communication strategies and techniques. During the next four months, students are expected to create and maintain a UBC blog and LinkedIn account, create resumes and cover letters, prepare abstracts, proposals, applications, reports, and correspond through various online communication media to other students and the instructor, Dr. Erika Paterson.
As this course helps shape students’ technical and professional writing skills, I hope this course will give me the necessary skills to make me a more desirable applicant for future employment or other opportunities. As a 4th year science student about to graduate, I have found it difficult to get accepted to different research and job opportunities. Therefore, I expect this class will be very useful, as it will provide me with the opportunity, practice, and feedback to improve my ability to effectively, succinctly, and professionally communicate and gain experience with networking. Furthermore, I hope this course will help me perfect my resume, teach me know to skillfully write cover letters to different employers, and help create my very own LinkedIn account.
Overall, I am excited to be taking this course and am optimistic that it can help further my future career and life explorations.
