Just a Little About Me
Hello, I am Jodie a 4th year Biology enthusiast and student, who has dreams of exploring different parts of the world and seeing, first-hand, as many animals possible. I have an insatiable curiosity about the physiology and behaviour of animals and am consistently amazed at how unique, adapted, and beautiful each species is. Since I was young, I’ve been fascinated by the diversity of animals, constantly reading books, watching documentaries, and searching the Internet to satisfy a developed curiosity about these strange, yet brilliant organisms.
Through my pursuit to understand and work with animals, I found myself furthering my education at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Over the last few years, I was able to further understand physiological mechanisms of animals through lectures, dissections, and experiments. This new knowledge led me to more critically look at animals and to ask questions of my own regarding how they function or how and why some species are very unique. I continued my exploration through volunteer research in a few labs around campus, a trip to the Bamfield Marine Science Center (got to first-hand explore the great diversity of animals through hands-on collection and in-depth observation in labs) and am currently working on my own research project in collaboration with Maria, an amazing researcher, involving Mustache Bats.
Currently, I am at a crossroads. Although research is very exciting and furthers my understanding of animals, I also want to help animals and apply the knowledge I have learnt. Therefore, my future career path is uncertain. Nevertheless, I definitely plan on working with animals, but I haven’t decided whether it will be through research or veterinary medicine. The temporary plan is getting as much experience involving hands-on work with animals that I can, hopefully in many different fields, and many different places around the world.
