Primary Students’ Perspectives on their School Learning Experiences (Principal Investigator) 2013-ongoing
This research investigates Indigenous and culturally-diverse children’s perspectives on their school experiences through their use of multiple modes. These modes include drawing, digital photography, film making, painting, writing, and storytelling. This study addresses how children’s views and funds of knowledge have the potential to support and shape the learning program in an urban, low-income school community.
This year, 2014-2015, I am also spending time with the students at a local Outdoor School. The data from the first year of the study revealed that the majority of students valued the time they spent outside due to their sense of autonomy and freedom in outdoor spaces, and the relationships and connections they made in an outdoor context with their teachers, peers, and with Nature. Below are images of the Outdoor School setting in Brackendale, British Columbia.
