Previously, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science from UBC, majoring in Biology, and went on to work at Arthritis Research Canada. During my four years as a Research Coordinator, I collaborated with technology companies, specializing in software development, to build web and mobile applications aimed at improving self-care for patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I then led a team of four to conduct randomized controlled trials to assess the efficacy of our applications. It was from these direct interactions with patients, that I learned how much of a pivotal role applications can play in improving a patient’s quality of life. I saw firsthand how the development of software was used to solve problems in scientific, business, and social contexts. Patients remarked ecstatically at how they experienced reduced flare-ups and improvement in symptom management. These human stories inspire me to get actively involved in designing applications that will help patients combat chronic illnesses and support their disease management.

Outside of work and school, I also serve as the Vice-President of Richmond Multicultural Community Services (RMCS). At monthly board meetings, I work cohesively with other board members to ensure legal governance and sound ethical decisions. Of particular note, two years ago, I helped reshape the organization’s mission and strategic initiatives which taught me a lot about the cornerstones of community development and the dynamics of anthropology and behavior.

My name is Johnathan Tam and I am currently a third year student in the second-degree Bachelor of Computer Science Program.
