My CFE Experience

I deeply enjoyed my time assisting Mr. Florencio in teaching primary-years music education at the Junior school of St. John’s School. The staff were incredibly warm and welcoming which made the quick transition from secondary to primary smooth and simple. However, my fondest memory will always be the amazing and inspiring students.

I had never before taught early-years or elementary music, so I did not entirely know what to expect when I got in front of a classroom. What I found was that the students were completely honest, pure, and full of wonder. Every class I could help but feel such intense joy because of the enjoyment of music that the kids displayed. I had a permanent smile on my face for three weeks straight. The music, activities, games, and conversations were all full of joy and learning.

What I realized about myself during this experience is that I enjoy early-years music education because of the ideas and concepts I can introduce to young minds in music. The immediate rewards are more than I could have ever imagined. I am so glad I did this short practicum at an Elementary School because I believe it fits who I am and how I enjoy to teach and talk about music. After a lesson I taught where students were able to compose and present a rhythm composition they created, a student asked me, “Mr. Logan! Are we going to do something like this again?” I was stunned. Then there I realized I had created a lesson and experience in music where a child had formed an interest in the subject material, and wanted to find a deeper knowledge and understanding of music, all because of their simple enjoyment of it all.
