Linking Assignment #3

Task 6: An Emoji Story

I respect Evan’s choice to choose a movie that was unconventional and didn’t follow a traditional, chronological narrative. This assignment challenging if only describing a common and predictable plot, and by extending his option to something unconventional he added to his challenge.

He did so quite methodically though, by creating a framework to explain the story that took some liberties with the original production, (which we all did, I’m sure, to distil the essence of our choice within the confines of emojis). With consistent use of particular emojis to represent individual characters or settings, and toying with the original film’s use of disruptive chronological order by setting the plot in a chronological pathway, he may have made it easier to decode the film. He is right to point out the ‘graphical restrictions’ of this assignment.

I appreciate that the took the time to consider how to lay out the emoji ‘sentences’. When I first read through his image of emojis, it made sense – not that I figured out what the film was – but it felt intuitive in the way in which it was read. Left to right, then to the next column. He was ahead of the curve in predicting that an English reading user would see them as columns, and the spacing of his two columns felt almost like the columns of a newspaper.

I am not someone who watches a lot of films, (as a father of a three and nine year olds, it seems to be mostly Disney and Pixar these days), so I don’t imagine that I’ve either seen the film or, if I did, it would likely be a challenge to recall. I am also curious and enjoy answers to things I don’t understand, (magic or illusionists confound me and elicit a degree of discomfort), so I couldn’t help but run the image and prompt through ChatGPT4o. The program seemed pretty comfortable to conclude that this was the film, (which I’m aware of, but have not seen), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?
