It has been a long time since I last blogged, just over 11 months. Enough about that though. This blog is not about my inconsistency in blogging but about the 90 Day Challenge my very good friend introduced me to.
The principle idea of the 90 Day Challenge is to set various goals that you want to accomplish over the period. Just simply writing them down can make a big difference in accomplishing them. These goals are meant to be S.M.A.R.T.:
Specific – “I want to be more fit” is not a good goal as it is too ambiguous. What does that mean? The goals should be able to answer the five “W” questions.
Measurable – An example of a measurable goal is to run a x amount of kilometers or run x-times each week.
Attainable – You don’t want to make the goal impossible to achieve but you also don’t want to make it too easy that it’s not a “challenge.”
Relevant – Set goals that are applicable to what you are trying to accomplish. There is no point in having a goal for the sake of having a goal.
Time-bound – In the case of this challenge, it is quite obvious that the goals are set to be done in 90 days.
So here is my list of goals that I began on January 5th.
- Ride my bike 3 times a week
- Keep food costs below $170/month
- Complete 20 push-ups a day
- Stay on top of class readings
- Find a job
- Read 4 novels
- Goal weight of 230 pounds
So far, just 9 days in, things have been going well. My list is currently posted on my fridge so I see it a minimum of 3 times a day, constantly reminding me. I can testify to the fact that simply writing down your goals makes a big difference. I have already completed one book (Eragon by Christopher Paolini) and am almost a third through my second (Eldest by Christopher Paolini). It is simply amazing what you can do, in my case reading, with an hour and 15 minute commute to school. Also, for the first time in my life, I have consistently done 20 push-ups everyday.
Having such a great experience so far, I believe that I will start another 90 Day Challenge after this one is complete. My challenge to you is to start your own 90 Day Challenge, make SMART goals, and see how it works for you.
