So..back to cell phones. We all need them (or at least we think we do), so why shouldn’t supermarkets sell them? Well…Loblaw is now going to! This supermarket giant will now provide cell phones and plans provided by major carriers such as Rogers and Telus. For the past while, Loblaw has only been selling their prepaid phones under agreement with Bell. That really limited their market. People want to buy fancy iphones, blackberries and androids. Let’s face it: Loblaw brand PC Mobile’s LG and Samsung flip phones are not ‘in’ anymore. So, Superstore/Loblaw is upgrading. 🙂
In my opinion this seems like a good move for Superstore. The company is already known for providing prepaid phones, and so the next step is to provide more options. Costco sells mobile phones and plans already, so it makes sense for Superstore to provide this product as well.
Loblaw has worked outside it’s niche before when deciding to take on financing. This became very successful, but mainly because of the perks of going through its brand, PC Financial. One example was providing bank accounts with no annual fee. The company needs to provide some kind of perk like that to their new mobile department. Costco is known for having special plans, and so should Loblaw!
