Frequently Asked Questions:
I am interested in submitting a paper for publication, but I am in the sciences and we do not write research papers for our classes. What opportunities exist for me to get published with the JOSS ?
If you are passionate about outer space but do not have a paper written for a specific undergraduate course, we highly encourage you to write a paper in your own time and submit it for publication. We accept many forms of undergraduate work, including literature reviews. We are also willing to accept shorter literature reviews (800-1000 words) from students in the sciences who would like to review a science article on outer space. If you would like more information or guidance on this, you are welcome to contact us at ubcjoss@gmail.com
How many papers will be published in the journal this year ?
We aim to publish between 5-10 papers each year – this will vary depending on the number and quality of submissions we receive.
Can I submit the same paper to the Journal of Outer Space Studies and other journals for consideration?
Yes. However, other journals may have different submission guidelines, so please also consult their guidelines before submitting.
How many papers can I submit ?
Each student can submit a maximum of two papers for consideration each year.
Do I have to change my paper to a specific citation style before I submit ?
No. We accept all citation styles.
I wrote my paper while I was on exchange. Can I still submit?
Yes, you are still eligible to submit a paper.
I am in the UBC Sciences Po Dual Degree Program. Can I still submit?

I wrote my paper for a purpose other than a UBC course. Can I still submit ?
Yes, as long as you are a registered UBC undergraduate student and the paper is your own original, unpublished work.
I am no longer an undergraduate student. Can I still submit?
As our aim is to showcase undergraduate work, we only accept papers from students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program, or who graduated during the past winter term session (September – April).
My paper is slightly above the word count. Can I still submit?
Yes, however, long papers will need to be shortened before they are published.
If I am selected to be an editor can I also submit papers to be considered for publication ?
Yes !
What does the editing process entail?
All papers are anonymized before they are reviewed by our editors. Submissions undergo a blind review process which consists of several rounds of reading and review by our editors, followed by a round of faculty review. Authors of shortlisted submissions then have the opportunity to work with student editors to refine their submissions for publication.
