Introduction

Hii everyone!! My name is Joy 🙂 I am from China, but I have already lived in Vancouver for almost 6 years by myself, yeahhh.. my parents live in China… sad international student here. I am 3rd year psychology student. I was born in April, yes, I really like Sakura! pinky flowers:) I also enjoy taking photos in spring, especially when the weather starts warming up, and everything slowly comes back to life. I like capturing small details like flowers starting to bloom, softer sunlight, and the way the city feels more alive after winter. It feels like a good time to slow down, go outside more.

I like reading, especially when a book really pulls me in and makes me forget about everything else for a while. It is something I enjoy doing at my own pace, whether that means getting completely absorbed in a story or just reading a few pages when I need a break. Reading feels personal to me, because different books connect with different moods, and sometimes a single line or idea can stay with me long after I close the book. One thing that important for me is music, especially instrumental or calm background music that helps me focus. It makes the reading experience feel more immersive and relaxed.

However, I do not usually read romance literature, so this course feels like a chance to experience something completely new. It pushes me a bit outside my usual reading comfort zone, which I think is a good thing, and I am curious to see how my perspective might change as I engage with texts I would not normally pick up on my own. I am taking this course in order to fulfill my literature requirement. Still, I am also genuinely interested in learning more about languages, culture, and how literature reflects different ways of thinking and living. I enjoy learning through discussion and hearing diverse perspectives, and I hope this course will challenge how I read and understand texts. I am looking forward to exploring new ideas, engaging with everyone in class, and having meaningful conversations throughout the term.

From the first lecture video, it explains that Romance Studies is not just another language course. Instead of focusing only on rules, origins, or boundaries, the course provides us to think about movement, change, and interpretation, and to see texts as living works that gain new meanings across languages and contexts.
