I am a sociologist by training (B.A. UC Berkeley, M.A,\/PhD Princeton). I teach <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iar.ubc.ca\/mapps\/\" target=\"_blank\">Asia Pacific Policy Studies<\/a>. With colleagues, I edit <a href=\"http:\/\/pacificaffairs.ubc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Pacific Affairs<\/em><\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asiapacificmemo.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Asia Pacific Memo<\/em><\/a> (also <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/MAPPSatUBC\" target=\"_blank\">tweeting<\/a>, on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Asia-Pacific-Memo\/120500581320676\">Facebook<\/a> and on <a href=\"http:\/\/ubc.academia.edu\/AsiaPacificMemo\">academia.edu<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>For some years now, I have been conducting research on \u5b66\u7fd2\u587e (<em>gakushujuku<\/em>) in Japan and this has led me to a broader interest in the global development of supplementary education (or, &#8216;shadow education&#8217;, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/jukupedia\/2011\/04\/27\/why-not-cram-school\/\" target=\"_self\">but not &#8216;cram school&#8217;<\/a>).
