Just before coming to UBC I got Netflix. I decided to buy it so that I could still watch TV when I moved away and now I am part of a statistic, part of 3.5 million Canadians that are already subscribed (a statistic from this Globe and Mail article).
I am now annoying cable companies just like the rest of them.
This is all part of a new age, really. iTunes saw the decrease in sales of CDs; eReaders saw the decline in sales of physical books. And now Netflix is closing down movie rentals and movie theatres left and right. They are the top rung of the ladder, the ones with the absolute advantage over the competition. I would much rather spend $9 a month on Netflix than over $100 for cable television that I barely have time to watch. I’m a busy person, as are many others, and we don’t have the time to watch television anymore.
Netflix is an innovator and is always on the cutting edge of providing what their customers want. To wrestle away Netflix’s crown in the movie and television industry will be tough, but it makes me excited to see where technology will take us in the future and who can claim the top spot in the industry.
