The Age Old Battle

One of many protests for Native rights outside of the Parliament buildings in Ottawa.

Though they seem like two unlikely opposing firms, the BC First Nations and the federal government are seeing a rivalry heating up between them. According to this article from the Vancouver Sun a delegation of various First Nation chiefs from British Columbia went to Ottawa in order to protest the building of a dam in northern BC.

This is not the first time a land dispute has hit the news, and nor will it be the last. The BC First Nations have protested numerous projects in British Columbia, including dams, pipelines, and other industrial activities that pose a threat to the environment and traditional Aboriginal hunting grounds.

The intense rivalry between the government and the First Nations is fueled mainly by the high strategic stakes. Companies that wish to build throughout BC see the land as a good investment and are willing to battle for claims for it, but because the Aboriginal peoples see the land as rightfully theirs and not up for negotiation it means that the value of the land increases. The government would like to see their profits increase, but find it difficult with the barriers that First Nations people set up.

I think this is a very important rivalry to pay attention to as it effects all people living in British Columbia and will continue to be an issue in the province.
