The Best Game You Can Name

You would think that in the NHL the name of the game would be hockey, but I’m starting to think that game has changed over the last couple years. Now, the game is money making.

Calen Falconer-Bayard mentioned in his blog how high prices and labour disputes in the NHL will hurt the league in the long-run. And while it would seem likely that this would be the outcome, I would have to politely disagree. Despite labour disputes that keep players off the ice for months at a time, fans seem to be willing to forgive and forget. Arenas that can house 20,000 people are still selling out in cities across North America, even with price increases. A fan’s devotion to a team will keep them coming back night after night whether or not the home team wins, all because of a love for the game.

Many fans blame NHL commissioner Gary Bettman for the lockouts; commissioners change. Often a team won’t sell many tickets if they’re the unpopular sport in the area; the LA Kings saw an increase in interest after their 2012 Stanley Cup win. Hockey is a fast-paced game where fans and players alike have learned to expect the unexpected, so why should the business side of the game be any different?

The Bell Centre, home to the Montreal Canadiens, has the largest capacity of any NHL arena (21,273) and has consistently sold out games since January 2004.

  1. It’s interesting how the love for the game continues to outweigh the business side of the NHL. Even with rising ticket prices and repeated labor disputes, fans still show up — not just for wins, but for the spirit of hockey itself. It really proves that hockey isn’t just a sport, it’s a culture. While money may drive decisions at the top, it’s the unwavering passion of the fans that keeps the heart of the game alive.

  2. It’s interesting how loyalty and passion keep NHL fans coming back, no matter the business side of the sport. That kind of devotion reminds me of the gaming world too — especially with games like Stardew Valley, where the community and long-term engagement matter more than flashy trends. Whether it’s sports or simulation games, people stick around for what they love.
