The album cover of Taylor Swift’s fourth studio album “1989” is the only album projected to sell 1 million copies this year.
Taylor Swift. Some people love her, some people hate her, but one thing’s for certain: she’s at the top of her game. In a year that has not seen a single artist have an album go platinum, Swift is set to do just that with the recent release of her fourth studio album, 1989.
Forbes reports that this time last year there were five albums labeled platinum by the RIAA. This year, the only album that’s managed to sell one million copies is the soundtrack to Frozen. Forbes even goes as far to say that Swift’s album could be the last platinum album ever.
Music sales have been on a steady decline because of how easy it is to access music for free through illegal downloads. The introduction of torrenting can be thought of as a disruptive innovation as it started off as a small market that eventually grew to overtake the music industry.
Unless the RIAA changes its standards to include streaming music in their sales, I would have to agree with the article on the point that 1989 could be the last platinum album ever. We live in age vastly dictated by the Internet and people no longer want to pay for what they can get for free.
