Magazine 2.0

I found this cool makreting blog posting news and commentary on Canada’s marketing and advertising world from the editorial team at Marketing Magazine, Canada’s leading marketing and advertising magazine. Check this out: http://markettingblog.blogspot.com/

One article caught my eyes right away: AR as a service in magazines. It talks about how a German magazine Sueddeutsche Zeitung has added Augmented Reality technology to it’s new issues.

YouTube Preview Image

This promotional ad proclaimed that new AR-laden magazines “is dedicated to present its readers with a print media experience never before seen anywhere in this form.” But author thinks that’s not really true.

YouTube Preview Image

“The cover of the magazine shows Sandra Maischberger, the well known TV personality, hiding behind her raised hands. When viewed through the smartphone`s camera, however, the popular TV host appears smiling cheerfully at the viewer. Inside is a photo “interview without words” with Lena Meyer-Landrut, who recently won the European Song Contest. When looked at through the smartphone little speech bubbles appear with jibes and comments she couldn`t help making during the shooting…”

The author thinks that “the faster adopters get past the novelty stage of adoption and start treating AR (or whatever new tech is hot this week) as just another arrow in the quiver, the more versatile it will become.”

When Sueddeutshce Zeitung figured out the flashy new AR utility of magazine, there could be more use of the new tech!~Then maybe book, print ads, and more could integrate AR!~ Just imagine reading our Marketing Text book with AR, and words& pictures start moving!!~ Isn’t it far more interesting?! Everything can be more than it seems, and one just can’t wait to discover more about it!!~In terms of Psychological need, just like turning the wants of iphone 4 into a needs, people could be thrilled on new little techs like this~

Around iphone-How cool are the ideas?

One of my best friend in UBC’s marketing bolg!~ https://blogs.ubc.ca/eileenwu/page/2/

Eileen has been my friend since high school~ I remember when we were talking about the this 58 inch iphone before one of our marketing lecture.  It’s like a table-size iphone!

Cool!~It’s it? Well I mean it’s not really much useful, but the idea is coming!~

Like Eileen said :”it satisfy people’s psychological need but not functional need.” Sure one may feel so good to have an iphone like that- a home multi-entertainment table~but it’s not really portable.

Apple are doing really awesome “Jobs”. They design revolutionary products and market them with highly effective strategies. It may be one of the most influencial brand on earth. And ideas around it’s products are interesting as well.

Not long after the first generation if iphone came out, two brothers in HeNan, China, invented this special case transforming an itouch into an iphone. (No offence to others, but aren’t Chinese good on doing these things? LOL)

It has a microphone, an earphone, a tiny vibration motor, a connector and a supporting battery. Insert a sim card, download an app, ur touchy is now upgraded to an iphone!~  $o$~

What a fun idea!~they actually sell these cases and have made some profit.

But you may think, hold on there~ should apple fight for its rights with this brothers’ business? You could say the special case is a kinda accessory for itouch, but it could influence iphone’s sales if the little business goes big. And then the brothers are like an competitor of apple, only sells products based on apple.

Well the truth is they were never big enough to catch apple’s eye. And then samsung, htc, blackberry and others all sells smart phones. It happens frequestly in technologies. I sometimes kinda feel although we have Copyright laws, business still copies, and plus, they convince people it’s not duplicate but extension of a “new market”.  Just like stock is kinda legalized gamble. (LOL, I don’t mean so serious the way I sound. ) Sure these kinda of “copies” are better off to both comsumers and companies, but where is the line that we shouldn’t cross? What is what we all shouldn’t forget before we go too far? Maybe it’s the nature that we only learn from mistakes that like this economy crisis….

But never to let go the inspiring ideas that may change our lives. After all, like Sir Isaac Newton said we all see further because we stand on giants’ shoulder~

Berk’s Bolg~the Urban Stranger.

Berkery, one of my marketing group member, runs one of my favorite bolg~ Check this out!!!~#mce_temp_url#

When I first saw this bolg, I was like “wow”~ McQueen, Chanel, CK, Ports… But More about Street Style~ Any girl would like to enjoy reading this! And it has become one of my frequently visited blog now. “Urban” means trendy to Berk, and “stranger” are the ones with  incredible street style and make you want to get to know them… and the rest of their wardrobe.  A streetwalker can customize their outfit to fit their mood or personality.

The idea of this name is very cool~ one can tell her unique understanding about fashion. And this name also fits marketing so much!~ I can’t tell how many times that I saw an inspiring street ad from a car, or bus or when I’m walking.

One of her recent post “There’s room only for one lady” got my eyes and I couldn’t agree with her anymore. When talk about Personal-Branding (what ever it means), Lady Gaga is definitely the one doing it right! “As an epitome of creativity and confidence.  She demands attention, and knows how to LEAVE HER MARK “-Berk.

I don’t remember how many time the mother monster surprised us. But she brought us the the new colour we’ve never saw before!!~

lov her writing stlye and taste. And I feel like know her a lot more now~lol~

“Career in Marketing” Workshop

I attended this workshop by UGO on Oct 22nd. There were four speakers from Cossette Communication-Marketing, A&W Canada, TNS Marketing Research, and ACL Service Ltd. Each speaker talked about their career in marketing just to give us some ideas on how we should expect and what we could do in order to work in the industroy.

Cossette provides a wide range of communications services such as advertising, customer relationship management, social marketing and so on. The speaker from Cossette talked about her career in marketing and listed some characters one have to have:

1. Be Passion! (one have to looooove marketing and commit to success)

2. Be Open! (look @ the world, learn skills)

3. Build Credibility!

4. Have Courage!

5. Think Like a Fish!! (if u wanna catch fish~)

6. Be Original!!

7. Brands! Brands! Brands! (How does one brand himself/herself? No one resist engaging people)

and also it’s all about people!!

From a firm’s marketing department point of view, the speaker from A&W food company introduced 3 key factors A&W focuses on:

1. Strategy (they continuously rewirte and improve their strategies)

2. Climate (may known as “company value” in other firms; that’s A&W people’s agreement on how they work together)

3. Brand (What your name means to others and so on)

The speaker used to be an accountant but later ends up with marketing, he said:” Do your best @ where you are, and doors will open!”

TNS is a marketing research company. The career options in TNS is devided into Quantitive Vs. Qualitative, Client side Vs. Supplier Side. Quantitive is responsible for all the numbers where Qualitative is in charge of the content. Good marketing research always requires one to see through datas. One have to be inquisitive, enjoy working with #s, have good time & project  management skill, have to have strong writing skills and the abilitity to sell.

ACL offers different solution programes to accounting firms and departments. The speaker is from its marketing department and here r some key notes:

Brands! Communication! Commitment!

-Understand the strategy

-Know the market

-Communicate, collaborate & build consensus

-Be accountable

—————————

A typical day in marketing involves dealing w/ different aspects of marketing/product/cumtomers for the company.

Knowledge is nothing until you use it!!

Marketing is about figuring out what drives human behaviours.

MarketMix Careers Tradeshow-UBCMA

so I attended this MarketMix event by UBCMA on 6:00-9:00pm, Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010 @Liu Institute for Global Issues at UBC.  I met some frineds, mixed with some industry marketers and had really awesome cake!!~(I really wonder where can I get those cake~tastes so nice~LOL)

About 25 professions came, TAXI branding, Reputation PR firm, Red label communications inc, Motive8Media, Boiling point ad, Costlines creative, Ipsos Reid marketing research, Vision Critical research and so on…

Idea Pitching Vs. Market Research

In marketing, there’s always this two types of jobs: the creative people who generate ideas & put out proposals, and the ones do research on different behaviour patterns, look at datas, and figure out advices. As the Gallup  strength finder test indicates my personal No.1 strength as Ideation, I may more kind on doing marketing jobs on creative stuff.

Big firm Vs. Small group

In the mix, there were professions coming from big ad agencies, and there’s one who runs marketing department of a company on her own. In the future job hunting, there’s always this two choices, the first considered more stable, standardized but hard to get promoted; while the latter represents more responsibility, more stress, more flexibility, and more sense of achievement once one accomplish something. I guess I’ll try both since the big firms may train me well with advanced marketing technique, and small firms may get me a touch of every espect of a firm.

I really like this kind of activities that we can learn about the industry and enjoy some free food!~>_<

FOSSIL LIFE STYLE-Long Live V!tage

I found this when I was making a decision on a Fossil watch

http://blog.fossil.com/

I’m kinda a so-called “brand person”. Usually when i make purchases, i would like to know more about the brands I’m chosing (well, obviouslly except for those daily non-durable goods). Brands are relevant to me- the spirits behind, the histories they had, the visions and objectives, so on…what’s beyond products and what’re the meanings for me to make this choice? These really do affect my decisions!!~

Blog is a good tool for marketing. But the hard thing is always to get people involve in the little customer-company “plateform”. With social networks today, the idea of “e-marketing” has been groundbreaking. Promotional e-mails keep telling me when& where the sales are going on. From conpanies’ perpective, it is a cheaper way to inform customers, but the question always is how well does it work? This new trend of marketing channel shift is exciting, yet remains in growing stage because people are still learning and trying to figure out the extent to which it functions as well as how to maximize its impact.

Love this “fossil life style” blog. Creative ideas always “blings” me. Whether it’s about life or commercial, I Heart IDEAs!!!~

Fossil is generally casual, fun and stylish. Look at how Fossil people and guest bloggers help branding this label together.

LOL, check out this canoe!~What a cute idea!~

just some snapshots~

ps. Of course they blend their products into posts, but better- they inject them into your lifestyle!

Think fun, think better, think future

YouTube Preview Image

here’s an ad that got my attention~

A boy plays succer find himself need a partern. So he goes home and cooks a lovely dinner for his parents and then goes to bed early. After ten month, he visits his new born brother proudly with a pair of succer shoes. And then he takes out the “Stratos” candy bar and enjoys it in that “better” moment. The commercial then ended with a picture of “Stratos” candy bar and “makes good better”.

The boy could have played football alone, but he want better- a partner; he could have just cooked the meal, but he want better- switched off her parents’ room’s light; he could have found a friend to play with him, but he want better- a brother.

It may also be a hint of  what “Stratos” company value: think fun, think better, think future.

This ad is delicious, creative, and lovely.

Such a farseeing cute boy!~

Pepsi vs Coke- depreciating competitor

YouTube Preview Image

So I saw this ad few years ago, and I was suprised by how Pepsi detracted its big competitor-Coke Cola: a kid buys two cans of Coke Cola (just when Coke’s marketing director was laughing), he then steps on the two cans of Coke and presses the highest button of pepsi; the boy then leaves the audience in silence…

I felt bad about a company doing things like this to depreciate its competitor, good marketing advertisement should be looking for a unique way to promote its product, not by hurting its competitor. In a world like this, we should now think of win-win.

This ad was later banned.

Mad Man – where the truth lies

YouTube Preview Image

Mad Men:

A term coined in the late 1950s to describe the advertising executives of Madison Avenue.

They coined it.

I justed started this TV series about marketing and life. The time in between the sales era and marketing era, when the idea of advertising and manipulation is booming, yet the age is changeable. It gives me a bit intel on how it was like for the early marketing. Things gets complicated if u start manipulating ur life and treat it like marketing business. Plus! a great combination of entertainment and school~love it~

A little more about the show:

Set in 1960s New York, the sexy, stylized and provocative AMC drama Mad Men follows the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue advertising, an ego-driven world where key players make an art of the sell.

The series revolves around the conflicted world of Don Draper, the biggest ad man in the business, and his colleagues at the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce Advertising Agency. As Don makes the plays in the boardroom and the bedroom, he struggles to stay a step ahead of the rapidly changing times and the young executives nipping at his heels. The series also depicts authentically the roles of men and women in this era while exploring the true human nature beneath the guise of 1960s traditional family values.
