How many persons have you done hand-shake with?

I can remember met with Allan in SUB. He offered me his hand and said welcome UBC. When I moved to new home-stay, new family introduced themselves with hand-shake and big smile. It was not exception to do this behavior in the interview and work place in LSBC. Even with computer fixer, we asked each other’s day by exchanging hand and greeting. Like this, Hand-shake is pretty usual thing in my Vancouver life.

But in Korea, I got a few chance to do this. It was totally formal and I wasn’t familiar with it. Business meeting or important contracts come to my mind if I imagine hand-shake. I practiced how to do handshake before I got an interview. I was really nervous I might make a mistake.

During internship, I got many chance to do it and it is getting well to do it. Not only introduce myself to new person, but also say hello to person who couldn’t see long time. I guess this behavior makes me be more kindly and friendly. By offering my hand to boss, I can get rid of distance with him, express my appreciation or respect. With handshake, I can approach to new person first, not pass or avoid them. Actually I had lots of relation through greeting. “Hello! I’m Julia. I’m really happy to meet you. How’s your today?” Although It’s very short time, I can start to talk with them and we will continue conversation. It’s also true that I’m getting more interested in relation and people around me. I tended to avoid other’s interest about me and sometimes get a stress. But now, I try hand-shake to even my fitness receptionist.

I think Handshake seems like a link between two person’s emotions. If I return to Korea, I will do handshake with missing everyone.

Lifesciences BC vs NIMS

My internship company is Lifesciences British Columbia and I am working in marketing department. Their goal is improving life sciences like medical device, medicine, software, and all of subjects concerned about human life in Canada. My company is similar with community center. So they have various field of member from company to intuition. And they control information that came from member, and open the forum and sometime do job posting. They don’t pursue profits, just make an effort to encourage life science in Canada.

I think there is no company like lifescieinces BC in Korea. Because, Canada is very popular with life science and Korea is developing that now. So a few company of life science are in Korea. But, in the future, my country will develop their own field and get a community like my company.

It doesn’t clearly similar with Lifesciences BC,  I have worked in NIMS(National Institution of Mathematics Sciences) in Korea. NIMS also have a lots of project related with life science, especially ‘Brain’. They are institution organization, but they do their best to connect with another company and university. To expand their location of research, they open the meeting and lecture and resister membership all around world. I guess they are already member of lifesciences BC.

They are similar with the fact that they are endeavoring to promote their country’s level of life science, not pursue their own profit. And they are also managed by government. Both are center of development in each country.

But Lifesciences BC established earlier than NIMS, so they are more systemic and bigger. And Lifesciences BC focus on human, on the other hand, NIMS has various field and they focus on research. So Lifesciences BC is strength in connecting and communication between company and institution, university and they are good example in the world. Otherwise, NIMS is representative of institution organization in Korea. So their results of research are really great and new.

Both of company has different goal and they have established in totally different purpose. So I can’t compare two organizations and say which one is better. But I am sure that community center like ‘Lifesciences BC’ is helpful to promote my national skills and it is necessary at any cost.
