{"id":1054,"date":"2019-01-14T19:19:30","date_gmt":"2019-01-15T02:19:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/junsongz\/?p=1054"},"modified":"2020-03-24T12:44:53","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T19:44:53","slug":"draft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/junsongz\/2019\/01\/14\/draft\/","title":{"rendered":"Facilitating Synchronous Online Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few weeks ago I developed and facilitated\u00a0a workshop\u00a0around <strong>facilitating synchronous online learning<\/strong> for the Learning Center at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initial assessment showed that the main<strong>\u00a0challenges <\/strong>of\u00a0teaching synchronous online classes are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Communicating with each student during the session<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Converting face-to-face activities to online sessions<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Audio or video technical issues<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Using interactive tools<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first glance, these challenges seem to be technical. However, it may be a combination of<strong>\u00a0beliefs and skill gaps.<\/strong> For example, I wonder why instructors need to engage with \u201ceach\u201d student in a synchronous online session.
