Unit 1- Reflection

Dear Readers,

This reflection post presents my thoughts, impressions, and feelings toward writing, critiquing  and editing my set of definitions from the feedback I received from my fellow members of the Wordsmiths Collective. If you haven’t had a chance to read my definitions for Female Organization Theory, a link will be attached on the bottom of this post!

I found great interest in creating definitions for my term, Female Organization Theory because it is a concept that is prevalent in our Westernized society today, especially in the news and social media setting. With movements such as the Me Too movement and the Presidential agenda enforced by Donald Trump, it is important to understand the social constructs and ideologies as to why we as members of this Western society are facing these issues of social adversity and sexist discrimination. This assignment gave me the opportunity to inform my peers on a theory that has opened up my perception of understanding society and how the world works. I found it easy to explain the meaning of my term through different forms of writing. The parenthetical, sentence, and expansive definitions as well as the visual representation of my definition was quite easy to formulate and construct knowing how prevalent and identifiable gender discrimination is in society today. I found that using examples to show how Female Organization Theory is applied to the real world was the best way to define my term. Using a concrete definition to define my term proved to be a struggle and a challenge of mine in this assignment.

Peer-reviewing my peer’s work was both challenging and effortless. The definitions I critiqued were clear, informative, and well-executed with little to no grammatical, spelling, or organizational errors. I did find however that not all definitions have specific details or examples to draw comparisons to the term. Further research was needed for me to fully immerse my understanding of the term, but the information given in the definitions got me interested in learning more.

In terms of editing, I found myself taking every recommendation given to me to improve my definitions further. I took inspiration from my peers in how they formulated their own definitions and added a few more sub-topics in my expansive section of the definition. Finally applying the changes necessary proved to be exciting and satisfying knowing the approval and support of your peers is present. Overall, this assignment has showed me how difficult it can be to formulate definitions of key principle and terms in different academic disciplines. It also helped me understand the varying ways of explaining, expressing, and defining the meaning of a concept.
