Bill Gates is pretty cool…
A few days ago my friend was talking about this article about Bill Gates and his new project to invest in clean energy companies. Basically he is helping to fund a facility, near Squamish Canada, that can use CO2 to produce petrol and diesel. Systematically CO2 is captured and “purified”, then using clean energy, in this case solar energy, is used to divide water and hydrogen. In the end CO2 and hydrogen are mixed to create a synthetic fuel or CE’s AIR TO FUELS™. This article made me think of two things… One, in respond to the climate change and global warming issue this discovery is revolutionary. The burning of fossil fuels is the leading cause of CO2 pollution in the atmosphere. The fact that we now have the technology to capture these destructive gases and use it to help power our everyday lives is an answer to our current problem. We live in a society and world in which we are completely dependent on fossil fuels.
My next thought was how can we implement this new discovery, instantly I thought of the number one cause of CO2 pollution, transportation vehicles. Electric cars are the new trend to live a more sustainable and eco-friendly technology, but is it really? Are they that efficient when it comes to long trips? Electric cars again depend on burning fossil fuels, sure they consume a lot less than non-electric, but still in the long run would electric cars be enough, or should we be focusing on a new concept?
For now, I think we need to accept the fact that things cannot change overnight, we are a society that is dependent on fossil fuels and there is really nothing we can do to change that. However, I do believe that with the help of these major corporate leaders, like Bill Gates. New discoveries and technologies likes these will keep flourishing and hopefully develop into the future of our sustainable world.
