Sustainability in the World

A Great Misconception…

Posted by in Uncategorized

In one of my past classes, we had a guest speaker come and talk to my sustainability and innovation class. Her name was Karen Storry, she is a project engineer for Metro Vancouver and has done countless other sustainable related practices. One thing that really shocked me and should be something that more people should be aware of, is that in Vancouver compostable plastic is actually not compostable…   Shocking, I know. This sparked my interest so I wanted to dive deeper into this claim. Like expected on the Metro…read more

We should listen more to Dr. Seuss…

Posted by in Uncategorized

Dr. Seuss was a very famous children’s author, with an amazing talent of portraying real-world issues, in a simplistic story and rhyme. Capturing the attention of both younger and older audience, his timeless works of art, bring back the nostalgia of escaping into his crazy imaginative worlds. A film, that was inspired by his novel The Lorax, was a work that completely changed the way I saw business. The film dives in the negative effect of business practices on the environment as well as the side effects of the materialistic…read more

Kids of the Future…

Posted by in Uncategorized

This week was truly inspiring with the climate change movement carried out by the youth around the world. This whole movement started with a viral video presented by 15-year-old Greta Thunberg a climate activist speaking for the future generation. Her speech at the UN Climate Change COP24 Conference, address governments and organization saying they need to take action against climate change (Haynes, 2019). Declaring that if things do not change they would be robbing their generation and future generations of their future. Her inspirational words contributed to a worldwide movement…read more

What’s on the outside matters…

Away in which company can start making sustainable decisions is by looking into their supply chain and lifecycle of their product, in order to analyze the amount of carbon footprint each stage requires. One sector that is very upsetting and at times very unnecessary is the packaging in which products come in. The amount of plastic and stickers used to “protect” products at times can be outrageous. A primary example of this when ordering something online and receiving a massive box for a product that could have fit in a box…read more

Why waste it? …

Posted by in Uncategorized

I would say food is one of the most important things in life… we literally cannot live without it, it gives us energy, it’s a reminder of home, it brings us comfort and indulgence. After reading an article about food waste, it was very mind-blowing to see the realities of restaurants. After reading the article on the sustainable brand website they provided shocking facts like how over 1/3 of the food that we produce is unused or that the amount of economic loss in food is nearly $940 billion (Koon,…read more

Less is more…

Posted by in Uncategorized

We have so much stuff, we’re in a constant cycle of working to just buy more stuff. Why? Personally, this is something I have struggled with until I saw the documentary Minimalism on Netflix. Basically, it’s about these two dudes that live a minimalistic lifestyle, meaning that they live with basic necessities. Instead of having a closet full of clothing, they have around 2-3 articles of shirts, pants, socks, jackets, hats, etc., in their living area, they might have just a table and a chair. Pretty boring. My first reaction…read more

Pretty Hurts…

Posted by in Uncategorized

Ever since I saw the Netflix documentary “The True Cost”, explaining the harsh and catastrophic harm the fast fashion companies have on sustainability. The heartbreaking truth of where our clothes came from and the ecological effects it has throughout the whole lifecycle.  At the time when I saw this film I had never seen anything about this issue and that scared me even more, what other things were these companies not telling us? Unfortunately, it took most consumers to realize the truth and some are still unaware, but finally, companies…read more

Bill Gates is pretty cool…

Posted by in Uncategorized

A few days ago my friend was talking about this article about Bill Gates and his new project to invest in clean energy companies. Basically he is helping to fund a facility, near Squamish Canada, that can use CO2 to produce petrol and diesel. Systematically CO2 is captured and “purified”, then using clean energy, in this case solar energy, is used to divide water and hydrogen. In the end CO2 and hydrogen are mixed to create a synthetic fuel or CE’s AIR TO FUELS™.   This article made me think of…read more
