In the summer, I took a multi-literacies class. We were assigned a project where we had to teach a concept through a creative way, such as a poem, a storybook, a painting or a song. I decided to teach the concept of acting objects through a song. Here are the lyrics that I came up with:
“Audition”
By: Jessica Van Elk
Sitting in the green room
Reading this script for my big audition
Trying to find my character’s position
As I analyze this text
I just gotta know what she wants
To get this role next
Think back to that acting class
What you learned and how you got
That objective that made you fought
Through that entire scene
That gave strong emotion
to speak to where she had been
Then, first things first to find
What’s her fight and how she’s blind
What’s getting in her way
what she needs to make them sway
Make it an action word
So she can make herself heard
I need to read the subtext
Make the most of what she says
To impress, to dominate,
To win her, to convince
So that she could make her stance
In order to get that chance
An objective gives the actor life
Drives the want and causes strife
As she frets upon the stage
Making every action go
Giving meaning to the page
Well at least I’m on my way
I’ve got some verbs
And a reason to stay
And now I’ve got to choose
To commit and learn all my cues
