Facebook Organic Reach Down Again

During the upcoming January, Facebook will be changing their algorithm on their organic posts reaches again. What this means is that Facebook will be making it challenging for posts that try to promote sales and other advertising. The only way to make sure the posts reach a larger amount of viewership is in fact to buy boosts from Facebook. In this particular blog, professionals are asked two questions.

1. Will the new policy be good or bad for marketers? Why?

2. Will it change the way you recommend businesses use Facebook? If so how?

A lot of experts say that this will encourage companies who use Facebook to create distinguished types of content. The content will either be high quality content or advertisement material. This way, there would be an opportunity to brands to separate their story telling and their sales pitch. While I do agree to some extent, this is still a major setback for small companies and marketers. Small businesses who can’t afford to boost their posts loses out from the organic reach. Big corporations have already found that their organic reach is now less than 2% to their fans from earlier this year. Of course it will also change the way people recommend businesses to use Facebook. It will be less effective and costly.

5 Easy Ways for a Better Online Profile

This particular blog caught my attention because it relates directly to a lecture we had with Julio with how to make a better LinkedIn profile. This blog written by Adam Toren talks about 5 affordable ways to make an online profile stand out. He provides these top 5 ways.

1. To build a consistent online brand for yourself. This is done by keeping a profile in one page

2. To have a professional headshot. This is done by having a professional profile picture that captures the best of you instead of having a random picture off Facebook, or taking a selfie.

3. To create an excellent biography of yourself. Even if you aren’t a writer, there’s nothing stopping you from contacting a professional writer to help you position and brand your bio for your profiles.

4. To create graphics to keep your profile stand out above the rest. The same way different resume formats look better, the same can be said about profiles. Although some social media sites aren’t customizable. For the ones that are, you create custom graphics that fit your brand. Even if you can’t do it yourself, you can contact a graphic designer who can.

5. To keep having consistent updates. Even Julio in class was talking about this. Keeping a post or updating your page regularly shows the viewer that you regularly contribute. It also shows people that your online profile is up to date and relevant and you’re finding opportunities to engage with people.

Patriots’ Automatic Twitter Messages Fail

The Patriots, the most popular NFL team and the first team to hit 1 million Twitter followers. To thank these fans, anyone who retweeted the “we hit 1million” message were sent an automatic customize image of a jersey with the fan’s twitter name on it. However a certain fan with a racist name soon “trolled” the flawed automatic response system from the Patriots’ Twitter account. A generated image of the fan’s racist Twitter name was imprinted on the jersey of an image and posted on the Patriots’ account for more than an hour. With a high number of retweets and favorites, the Patriots had to follow up with an immediate apology.

This is a prime example of large corporation automatically generating messages. In this case, a very offensive and racist name showed up in an official post made by the corporation and damaged their reputation. Although it is understandable that it is very unefficient to conduct real human posts for thousands of fans who retweeted the message, the robot they put in place should have had a better filtering system. This also relates directly to filtering out trolls from your fan pages which is extremely important to social media. Any company would want to advertise to people who matter instead of people who hate your brand/company.

Marc Jacombs’ Instagram Commerce

Marc Jacombs, the famous beauty brand targets customers who lies a post that includes a specific hashtag “#ShopMJB”. The digitial team for Marc Jacombs worked with the company’s email provider, Bronto Software and created a new sales method on Instagram. Users who sign up on Instagram and like anything from the company’s account @marcbeauty that has a “#ShopMJB”. An email will trigger with a link to a product page on Marc Jacob’s website. The Marc Jacombs Instagram account used to use the hashtag everyday but after the launch they have only used it 3 times for measurement purposes. They receive an average of 2,300 likes on each use.

I think this is a great method of combining the Instagram platform with email marketing. With this type of data tracking, they are able to target a specific type of customers who like their products with email marketing. This way they are less likely to get random people who are not interested and their click through rate will be a lot higher for their advertisements. This is just a start for hashtag tracking technologies. In the future companies can market directly to you by a lot more of your online social media behavior. Imagine liking someone’s post on chugging a beer and getting immediate coupons and deals for alcohol. That’s what the future of e-marketing is heading towards.

Developers Abandoned Their Google Glass App

The consumer launch of Google Glass will not be happening this year. One of the primary reasons is that the developers of its apps are abandoning it. Out of a survey of 16 developrer contracted by Reuters, 9 of them have stopped working on their original project or even abandoned it completely. The main reason for abandonment is due to the lack of customers or the limitations of Google Glass. Some of them even switched to developing for businesses exclusively rather than for consumers. Although facts are looking grim for the development processes, Google has kept its word about being enthusiastic for the overall project.

Google Glass has been a hyped consumer good for a long time. Many people including myself think that with these glasses, the world of E-marketing will be changed again. Just like smart phones and app advertisement. There will be many opportunities for marketers to extend their reach to a new platform such as Google Glass. Many social media and apps will be made exclusive to this new product and there might be introductions to a new type of advertising. Overall this delay has been disappointing but the directional change of Google Glass to more business orientated could be better for us. What do you think?

Vacation Social Sharing Made Easy

If you’re a lazy vacationer who loves social media, this hotel might be your next destination. A particular hotel in Israeli is partnering up with a digital ad agency called Ecapiltoos. Together with the hotel, they are offering guests a RFID bracelet when they check in. This bracelet automatically connects with each guest’s Facebook account and automatically posts each guest’s experiences as they do different activities around the resort. Of course everything requires permission from the guest. There are 16 interactive camera stations around the resort including one underwater in the pool. In the near future, this company plans to update the capabilities to Twitter and Instagram as well.

For starters, I think this is a genius idea and extremely innovative. Guests are more likely to enjoy their vacation than fiddling around with their phones and posting updates on their Facebook. They can then use more time to enjoy their vacation. Since this is a unique idea, this hotel will have a competitive advantage to people who care a lot about social media which is a majority of today’s youth. With the online social media industry growing, it’s not a surprise to see technology advance to accommodate it. Would you go on a vacation here?
