united-nations-day

United Nations, even if fully founded, can not take the place of social entrepreneurs.

UN is initially built to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations and promote social progress, better living standards and human rights. Its value proposition focuses mainly on the relation between nations, which is different from what social entrepreneurs do.

how_social_entrepreneurs_that_need_money_can_get_noticed

Social entrepreneurs, as individuals, solve seemingly intractable problems by finding OPPORTUNITIES which others failed to find. After all, they are entrepreneurs generating social value with STRATEGIES. They are also self-employed, which means that their brilliant ideas can be acted out as long as they want to. Like for Muhammad Yunuss case, he sought to solve the problem in his hometown rather than in the poorest area in the world.

UN, focusing on the poorest areas and seeking to resolute the hardest problem, sometimes overlook other less suffering but still miserable cases. It was mostly driven by social responsibility. Even if fully founded, there is no enough insight for UN to focus on EVERY problem that exists. Social entrepreneurs, with more ideas, may find better solutions to various kinds of problems that exist in our world, thus creating shared value to more people (always without sacrificing the interest of anyone).

Since long long ago, banks have been referred as “too big to fail” for basically 2 reasons. One is that it is supported by the government who will offer them bailout. The other is that banks usually have a large amount of assets.

bank-2012

But now, the first reason might not exist anymore, according to new global rules created by the Financial Stability Board(FSB). After judging the fairness for endlessly bailing out banks with tax payer’s money, FSB decided to let the stakeholders for the bank pay for bank’s loss.

There is some influence that the rule has on banks. First, the customer segments for the bank might change due to the fall in stability in bank. For a bank, the key activity is to keep customer’s money. When a bank is less reliable, it fails to perform its key activity well, losing customers (and their trust).

stock-market-quotes1

For the same reason, conservative stock buyer may stop buying bank stocks since the level of stability for banks NOW is no longer a point of differentiation.

Loosing its existing customer segments, value proposition and the reliability for performing its key activity, banks may have a hard time repositioning itself.

It is interesting that AT&T is buying Mexican’s largest cellphone company Iusacell, hoping to go global. Though its previous target is to compete in the Europe market while buying Vodafone(British phone company).

LogoIusacell.3

The prime reason for going worldwide is that AT&T thinks that the global telecommunication marketplace is going to scale.

9837-shutter_article-300x199

How will the market of global telecommunication system be in the future? Yet it may seem useless to most of us since it’s not related to our daily life, going global is indeed the trend of technology and development of goods. Companies in majority is always chasing to make break-throughs to make their product better, therefore keeping on using the latest technologies and ideas. AT&T’s taking over Iusacell is a great illustration of creating values for customers(to some in need).

However, as AT&T begins to use the global telecommunication system, it is also incurring higher cost. In this case, it spent $2.5 billion buying Iusacell and paying their debt. Then, the question arose, how will they break-even? And even if they can break-even, how long it would it take? At the same time, its original services is facing disruptive innovation, projecting protential lost in existing profit.

Jell-O, the Perfect Snack

I totally agree with Farwah Ahmed’s point in her blog. As she stated, Jell-O lacks points of parity (specifically ready-to-eat feature) to keep itself in the competition in today’s fast-pace society. It value proposition (being fun to kids), which once leads it to success, no longer works anymore due to the lack of time to make Jell-O.

There are some other products or even companies facing the same problem as Jell-O did. McDonald is one of them. In contrast to its slogan ”I’m lovin’ it”, McDonald isn’t that much loved by customers. The fast-food restaurant which once pervaded the whole world’s eating style is now falling in same-store sales.

McDonald, I'm lovin' it!

McDonald, I’m lovin’ it!

Same as Jell-O, its value proposition is no longer favored by customers. Nowadays people tends to have a healthy life style, which means that deep fried instant food with little vegetables like McDonald is losing its customers. Apart from that, competitions arise when healthier fast-food places like subway began to spread over the world. Facing the problem, McDonald is now providing COMPARATIVELY nutritional choices for customers to gradually get rid of its image as junk food. But is it that easy to change a LONG-EXISTING value proposition?

Department facing challenge to hire doctors

Robert A. McDonald, the secretary of the government agency-Department of Veterans Affairs, is devoting himself to hire new doctors. As he stated, many veteran’s hospital lacks doctors, which is different from the proper treatment for veterans.

There has long been a shortage in doctors for V.A., and sometimes even in the industry. Therefore, to solve the problem, new medical schools need to be built while more medical students studying existing schools.

Screen Shot 2014-11-11 at 9.24.08 PM

Apart from providing veterans with proper medical care, what Department of Veterans Affairs do also creates value for medical students, who have a heavy loan burden. The loan forgiveness is a important reason for the choice.

Team of doctors.

Government supports V.A., which makes it possible for them to provide newly-graduated students with a salary of $233,000. The salary is near the salary of a normal supervisor. This may lead to grads choosing V.A. only for the salary, failing to develop their own skills and characteristics.

Although the high pay and loan forgiveness is an important point of differentiation, V.A. should stick on their value proposition: taking care of veterans. They can further polish their employment processes, choosing the ones who genuinely want to take care of veterans.

Breach Issue in Home Depot caused by hackers

2000px-TheHomeDepot.svg_-300x300

Home Depot, a US retail company, was hacked recently and 53 million customer’s email address was exposed to hackers. Previously, 56 million debit and credit card information was stolen through Home Depot as well.

target122713

However, Target, another US retail, also lost control of 70 million customer’s information.

These days, in order to build a stronger customer relationship, stores collects customer’s information a lot. With higher technology, a giant database can be easily built. This paves the way for hackers to gather large amount of information in a short time.

The stolen of card information is even worse. The convenience of technology, which was used to solve customer’s problem, now acts in an opposite way. Even if customers received Home Depot’s reminder of stolen information, there is nothing to be done to retrieve their payment information. The only thing they can do is to abandon the former chip.

Customers, frustrated by the breaches, may ends in choosing another company to shop with. So it is urgent for companies who are facing with the same issue to develop their security system. This can somehow, help the company to meet points of parity in the market and regain customer’s trust.

Russian hackers steal more than 1 billion online identity credentials

Taseko forced to Abandon a new Mine Found(Class 10)

10192767Taseko Mines Ltd. stated to have found a mine in BC, which will resulted in about $1.1-billion profit, near a future tribal park. The first nations, perceiving a instinctual hatred for mining, deliberately stated the mine spot belonging to the tribal park, which shouldn’t be true. The project by Taseko was forced to be postponed due to the influence of natives.

The interpretation of first nations had an influence in Taseko’s Business Model Canvas. They stopped Taseko’s project according to the social/culture trend based their habit. And in the canvas, the project, in key activities, is forced to a stop. Therefore, Taseko turned to a new copper project in Arizona, which related loosely Taseko’s value of “focus on the operation and develop on mines in British Columbia”. However in the same time, the company do win a name of considering first nations in Canada.

In SWOT Analysis, the opportunity of the new project with tremendous profit hardly existed anymore, subject to the threat of regulation protecting first nations, as well as their culture and believe. Even when Taseko found an alternative to the park project, its future profit certainly decreased.

Amazon in action to reduce late shipments

screen shot of AMAZON.CA

screen shot of AMAZON.CA

Amazon is recently corroborating with Postal Service while still having UPS as a parter, aiming to reduce late shipments. Other than that, it is building more sortation centres to store its inventory. As Marilyn stated,

These two changes made can potentially solve the biggest problem that the company faces: late shipments is not only costing the company money, but also its brand image and buyers’ trust.

I somewhat disagree with the points.

Amazon should act in concordance with its value proposition, innovative and viable.

Since service of postal service is covered by UPS, which is known for efficiency and holiday-free policy. The change in delivery may break its brand promise(value preposition) of viable, which was supported by its strong partner UPS while providing no significant benefit. Apart from that, Amazon has been closing its shopping centres in Kansas, indicating a negative marginal benefit in building new shipping centres.

Alternatively, it would be a great idea if they choose DHL as their extra parter to decrease late shipment rate. DHL provides drone services (PoD) and can be used to show Amazon’s compatibility with innovative technologies, reinforcing its value proposition.

GM recalling cars

120515_gm_ap

General Motors is facing defect problem right now.

GM has been recalling cars since last winter due to its defection. Now, it is retrieving another 40,000 cars around the world. And its product, Impala, was recalled due to MANY DEFECTIONS like transmission defect, ignition and joint problem. It’s not a surprise that the national institution, NHTSA, required investigations into the quality of the cars by GM.

I came up with some suggestions under this circumstance. Firstly, they should focus more on the inspection part of the cars. Products have to meet PoP of the industry to get itself into the game. However, GM failed to achieve even PoP in quality. Besides, they also need to develop better customer relations and wider channels. These parts became especially useful when GM might want to take responsibility of there mistake. Good customer relations keep consumers trust even after the defection and broad channel grants GM a chance to win customers back.

GM, survived through government bailout in 2009, should find its own approach to regain population instead of relying merely on the fund it has. Neither should its glorious history stiffen it from producing better(meeting PoP) and more innovative(with PoD) products.

An Analysis to Mathew Martoma’s Insider Trading(Class 3)

0908_mathew-martoma_1024x576

Mathew Martoma, once working in a fund firm, got a nine year sentence on Monday for insider trading. Earlier this year,  Martoma was found guilty of trading the information about a drug, for $200-million dollar profit for his company and $9-million for his own.

Homo economicus tends to act out of self-interest and Martoma should not be an exception. Due to business nature, we have to guess what others will be doing in order to be success. During the process of guessing, the market failed to reached its equitability between the own interest and morality of Martoma, which caused the action of moral deficiency- insider trading. He, as the first moral actor, got a nine-year-sentence. And his former company, SAC, (second moral actor) also paid over $6 million for this.

I suppose he should have found the balance between his own self-interest and business ethics, with which everyone should comply. Had he not committed insider trading, he shouldn’t have gained such a long sentence.
