Soft drink giant PepsiCo has a new goal other than quenching millions of people’s thirst: to launch more water goals to help sustain the world’s environment. It is reported that they have already met their aim of reducing water usage by 20% from the year 2006 to 2015 and is continuing to do so through introducing new technology.

PepsiCo is now considering whether some water stressed areas are still suitable for hosting their plants. By removing these production sites from their list, they can help ease the water burdens in these areas. This is where the ethical issue arises.

Who does not want to help our ever-degrading environment? In fact, it is necessary that attention and action is promptly brought to this problem. But as the article says “a business [is]  accountable to its financial stakeholders”. It must pay attention to the needs of its owners, investors and employees while wanting to save the world. Just how much potential profits are those within it willing to sacrifice towards this cause?

PepsiCo recognizes the need to protect the environment, but ultimately, it is not up to the company itself, but those within it to decided what the next step will be.
