Marketing plays a significant role in every businesses. In Comm 101 lecture, marketing can be defined as “the real life actions of communicators to advise beliefs or actions in others. It is a blend of science and art and is critical to note that marketing happens without intent.” As the society progresses, internet has become more and more crucial to the public’s everyday life. Social Media, as a result, becomes a necessity in many people’s life, especially those living in developed countries like Canada and America. An online survey in 2013 done by Insights West and 6S Marketing stated “64% of the under-30 population agree ‘they would feel out of touch if they didn’t use social networking sites or apps regularly’” Many companies therefore have targeted Facebook as part of their marketing strategy since it is one of the most popular social networking service nowadays. Facebook manages to provide a social platform for businesses and other organizations to sell to its users. The advertisements can be “liked” and commented just like any other Facebook feed.

These social marketing not only will attract more customers but will also conduct some research regarding the interests of public through Facebook, which will be counted as a secondary quantitative research. People can simply close the ad if they are not interested. According to the news article, “How Facebook’s Ad System Works” the system is capable of targeting its users with “geographical locations, personal interests, characteristics and behaviour, including activity on other internet services and even in physical stores.” The data collected through Facebook may further help the businesses to improve their product and the positioning in the market.

These advertisements will easily attract individual’s attention as he or she uses Facebook. The distinction between actual content and ad has become more and more obscure over time. Ron Berman, a professor of marketing at Wharton stated “There is an ad-selling mechanism, but the ad itself isn’t really an ad. It’s content.” When people sees an ad separately like having to watch a 30 seconds clip before a youtube video, they will be very rejective. However, when ads are blended into the organic content, people will be morewilling to actually look at these ads and examine their value propositions. On the other hand, it may also cause some Facebook users to have abominate opinions since these ads are also interruptions to their browsing experiences if these ads are not captivating enough. In my opinion, social media marketing is an efficient and effective strategy to promote a business’s product or services. As long as the ads are not too boring or annoying, Facebook users won’t be detested toward the products.
