Human trafficking is the second largest illegal industry in the world next to the international drug trade, and not enough is being done to help those who are trapped within its clutches. Men, women, and children are being bought and sold by the thousands everyday to people who have nothing but evil, and ill intentions.
Often the children who are involved in human trafficking will spend their adult lives as the prostitutes we see on the streets. If arrested, these people are very often subject to the unfair treatment by the criminal justice system that will usually hand them the strictest sentence. Those who purchase their services will often, if at all, be subject to a few hours of community service, sent to a weekend at John School to learn the harmful ways prostitution affects society, or will be let go with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. More needs to be done to bring these purchasers to justice for demanding a service that is illegal and puts people at risk.
Rehabilitation options for those forced into human trafficking at a young age, then into street prostitution is needed. Anyone who is forced into a lifestyle that has negative effects on both their mental and physical health need resources to build coping skills that will provide a healthy way to move past their traumatic experience. These people will need to be supported and encouraged to use their experiences as a way of building strength to come back to society and be a productive, healthy individual.
People subject to prostitution and human trafficking almost never have access to health care or sexual health resources to keep them safe. These resources aren’t just difficult for victims of human trafficking to attain, but also are becoming increasingly difficult for everyday citizens to have access to as well.
Access to contraceptives, sexual health resources, and safe abortions are vital to the sexual health of people world wide. Everyone should have choices when it comes to how they choose to protect themselves, and how they choose to react in times of emergency. Options should be available for everyone, period.
