My name is Kathy and I graduated from Bachelor of Science in food, nutrition and health at University of British Columbia. I was born and raised in Calgary but I am planning to work and settle down in Vancouver after graduating from Education. There are numerous reasons to why I want to be a home economics teacher but the primarily reason is doing what I love for my career. I always had a passion for cooking and baking ever since I was in high school. As I transitioned into UBC, I would always bake and cook with my roommates when I finish classes. As I approached the end of my undergraduate years, I realize that what I want to purse in my career is not chemistry and other sciences I studied in school, but rather my hobby. Thus, I ended up choosing education after graduation, to pursue a career as a home economics teacher. In my spare time I love to eat and eat out at restaurants to socialize with my friends. I would have become a good food critic if it wasn’t my love for the children. I believe I would make a perfect home economics teacher because I’m a very engaging person and tend to work side by side with my students. Working side by side is perfect in the textile and food courses because it requires more hand on practice rather than the traditional lecture style.
My belief of education is that hard work triumphs over natural talent. Although I believe that not everybody is born equal, some people are naturally smarter than others, everybody still has an equal chance to succeed. The only barrier that separates an A student from a C student is the ability to push themselves. I do not believe that students can be “bad” at home economics, it mainly has to do with whether the student feels motivated and wants to learn. I believe that students will stumble many times during their school years, they might fail exams, did not have enough time to complete an assignment, are nervous during presentations, but I strongly believe if a student never gives up their efforts will be worth it and they will find success in the end. As a teacher, I will encourage and inspire them to never give up and to persevere. It is a very rewarding and happy experience for me to see my students overcome obstacles and succeed. I believe that all experiences helps to make someone stronger, shapes who you are, helps you develop into a more a mature individual. No experience is ever wasted.
