Does student engagement improve by creating stronger student/teacher and peer relationships?

Abstract

This project looks at relationships in the classroom and their influence on student engagement. It focuses on student/teacher and peer relationships. It assumes that by building positive relationships there will be an increase in student engagement with the course material, other students, and the teacher. This topic and research is gaining traction in the education community as relationships are being revealed to have a significant impact on learning. The project will be implemented through subtle interactions with students that are employed through the curriculum itself. The curriculum will be altered to include interactive methods, classroom climate activities, and distinct classroom roles. Observations will be made throughout a 10-week practicum period to assess the relationship growth in relation to engagement and learning in the classroom.

The importance of relationships in the classroom is a growing issue. Currently, Social Emotional Learning and Mindfulness are being examined in school settings, separate to curriculum, to improve student learning and mental health. This project will demonstrate that all curricula should be created with relationships and classroom environment in mind and that through relationship building curriculum, student learning and engagement will improve.
