{"id":226,"date":"2021-04-13T20:47:34","date_gmt":"2021-04-14T03:47:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/katrinawong\/?page_id=226"},"modified":"2021-04-13T20:50:57","modified_gmt":"2021-04-14T03:50:57","slug":"final-project","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/katrinawong\/final-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Final Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For my final project, I decided to look at using the website, Story Bird, as a literacy tool for my students at school.<\/p>\n<p>I created a video that is intended for my students which explains how Story Bird works and how they use it as a creative and fun writing tool.<\/p>\n<p>I have also included an analysis of using Story Bird as an educator with some important criteria when evaluating a resource in technology.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ETEC  540 -Final Project- Story Bird Explanation\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Old3J4X14po?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><u>When analyzing \u201cStory Bird\u201d as a resource for literacy some important evaluation criteria can be considered:<\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4>Impact On Student Learning<\/h4>\n<p>-Storybird offers picture books for digital reading and writing<\/p>\n<p>-efficiently enhances writing proficiency through observation, interaction,<\/p>\n<p>literacy, comprehension, and fluency.<\/p>\n<p>-English Language Learners (ELL) develop English language proficiency academically<\/p>\n<h4>Cost<\/h4>\n<p>Storybird has four options for payment: Individual $8.99\/month, Individual $59.88\/year, School Plan, or District Plan. Printing, publishing, books and artwork purchase involve additional costs.<\/p>\n<h4>Privacy<\/h4>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong>Personal information users provide at registration include name and email address -information is used to do internal research on our users\u2019 demographics, interests, and behaviour to better understand, protect and serve the Story bird community<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Bias to Schools who have monetary funds<\/h4>\n<p>Storybird supports family involvement for younger learners at home, education of English language arts is suggested to emphasis core teaching<\/p>\n<p>-The drawback is that schools and students who have little monetary resources to afford Story Bird or the additional printing of books cannot use it<\/p>\n<h4>Alternate languages other than English<\/h4>\n<p>-Story Bird does not provide books that are written in languages other than English<\/p>\n<p>-if you\u2019re an educator, you <em>can<\/em> work with students in a language of their choice separately<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Digital Literacy Tool Encouragement<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Internet is required to use Storybird<\/p>\n<p>-English language development can empower learners in both reading and writing<\/p>\n<h4><strong>User Diversity <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Storybird users include: family members, teachers, students, friends, authors, artists, amateurs and professionals<\/p>\n<p>Storybird presents multiple layers of portrayed diversity within their graphic images<\/p>\n<h4>Ease of Use<\/h4>\n<p>Storybird is easy to use for every user even younger learners<\/p>\n<p>-there is Help Guidance and How To videos to support users at becoming more adept in using Storybird<\/p>\n<p>Each segment of Storybird is clear with simple step by step instructions<\/p>\n<p>The appearance of the website is clear and easily navigated as long as the user is literate in English<\/p>\n<h4>Access<\/h4>\n<p>-Mobile phones, desktop computers and especially iPad\/iPhone\/tablet are great access for Storybird<\/p>\n<h4>Conclusion<\/h4>\n<p>Storybird is a wonderful online tool for teaching and learning in Language Arts. The literacy program enables users move the process of writing and creating in a fun and engaging way.\u00a0 It can be a great way for teachers and students to access learning in Language Arts as their work can be saved for re-reading and review.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Story Bird (2020, Jan 8).
