When teaching the parts of speech it is helpful to have visual and tactile cues, as well as stories to go along with them. The symbols used in Montessori each come with an accompanying story. I will look into those stories and try to get them up here as soon as I can, but for now I can only tell you the one that I remember hearing as a Montessori child. The pronoun is a purple isosceles triangle. The symbol in my classroom as a child had an angry face drawn on it. The story is that the pronoun is jealous and angry because it is only a stand-in for the noun. It has to do a lot of the work when the noun doesn’t feel like showing up, while the noun gets all the credit. When I was teaching the parts of speech again to my grade 6/7 class this year (we needed to touch on it again before we could get into sentence clauses) the students had fun helping to make up stories for the rest of them. The verb is fairly obvious… it is a big red ball. It’s nice to have the 3D shapes as well, particularly when working with younger grades. Making parts of speech tactile! Amazing!
Anyway, I created a set of large symbols that I could post in the classroom. I’ve attached a link to that PDF. As well, I put together a word-sort sheet that they worked on as groups, and a take-home individual worksheet, as well as a final quiz. Here are the links. Help yourself.
