Description:

This student-directed, completely online course, was designed for grade 11 students to prepare them for independent living after graduation. It is essentially a group of mini courses where students of varying abilities are able to pick and choose which skills they need to learn to live independently. It includes a preliminary compulsory module (Module 1: Personal Assessment of Current and Desired Skill Levels) where students will be required to develop a greater understanding of their current versus desired skills regarding: Personal Hygiene & Grooming, Personal Safety, and Management of Food, Household Management, Wardrobe Shopping and Selection, and Personal Affairs. As the final assignment of Module 1, students, in collaboration with their family and education advisors, will use the elective modules and/or units to design a personalized 120 hour Independent Living 11 course which reflects their individual educational needs.

Goal For Module One:

Students will develop a greater understanding of the personal skills needed to live independently

Objectives For Module One:

  • Students will analyze of their own personal strengths & weaknesses
  • Students will collect personal and objective information
  • Students will determine areas of needed growth
  • Students will develop strategies for requesting and receiving sensitive information from trusted individuals

Unit 2: Formulating Learning Goals

When I was thinking about what course I should design, I asked myself the following questions:

  1. What are my passions?  The course should be something that I feel very strongly about.
  2. What is my background knowledge?  I should have a good general background or have expertise in the topic that I intend to teach.
  3. What is my experience?  I should be able to draw upon personal experiences to help students develop understanding in the topics.

I came up with: Independent Living Skills 11

I have many passions, but one of them is to help others, especially those who have various challenges.  My background knowledge is in Special Education, and I have extensive experience teaching in the area of Special Education including High School, Elementary, and being a Specialist teacher.  One of my current roles is to oversee the programming of children with many diversities, as well as ensuring that the adults who work with them have adequate training to properly care for the children.

I am looking forward to developing this course, as I think that it would be beneficial to many children working towards developing independent skills.
