The article found for this week’s blog post pertains to blackberry’s Chief Executive officer John Chen and his comments on Apples latest product release, the IPhone 6. Upon the release of the IPhone 6 there has been speculation of incidents in which the IPhone 6 has bent out of shape in customer’s Pockets. John Chen took a shot at apple at an event in Toronto saying “I would challenge you guys to bend our Passport”. This story was particularly interesting to me as we have been discussing blackberry frequently in COM 101 and how its power in the phone industry has diminished since apple burst onto the scene. It can be seen here that John Chen “kills two birds with one stone” so to speak when he puts down apple for having a product which can be damaged so easily while at the same time promoting his product the blackberry passport when he “challenges”  consumers to “bend our Passport”. The comments made by CEO John Chen may or may not have any large impact on the demand for apple or blackberry but it is a good example of marketing at any opportunity given for the product being sold. It also forces consumers to question their true desires; Quality or brand name? I expect apple recover from this initial setback and come up with a solution to the problem of the disfigured iPhone 6. But in the short term their opening sales may be damaged due to the bad publicity.
