ENG 301 was a great course for me to take as I currently work full-time at a bank. The course gave me great guidance on how I should format and write my business emails, which was extremely relevant for my day-to-day activities when I exchange emails with my coworkers or managers.
I also currently have been in the process of applying for new jobs and have been trying to change my resume and cover letter for the upcoming fall internship postings. When we learned about creating resumes and writing cover letters and reference requests for job postings, I was able to directly apply the skills learned to revise the job applications.
During the term, I was also able to learn a lot about writing formal reports. It had been quite some time since I needed to write a long research paper – therefore, everything including research, formatting, writing, and simply proofreading the work felt new to me. It was very interesting as after the formal report was due, I had to write another paper for the Business Course I am currently taking. I could directly use my learnings in this course to finish another final paper that was 30% of my final mark. I remembered the formatting errors I had done, the use of “I” and “we” that I had to eliminate, how to write a table of contents, not using numbers in the first word of a sentence, formatting tables, and using APA citation for works cited page.
Lastly, the peer review aspect of this course was extremely beneficial. Not only was I able to learn from the mistakes that my peers helped me point out, I was able to learn from their deliverables and was able to see how other people write. Furthermore, I had become friends with all the members in the English group – Jake’s Friends. We truly became friends and supported each other throughout the term, not only for this course but also even for other computer science courses we had. I thank the opportunity to work with them, learn from them, and gain friendship as well along the journey.
As ENG 301 was an course delivered in online platform, I did not think that I would have this much of a great experience. I also did not think that I would be able to make friends through this course. Contrary to what I thought in the beginning of the term, I was able to make closest friends out of this course and was able to learn a lot about technical writing that I did not about before. I would like to end this reflection by thanking Professor Erika Patterson for helping us and guiding us throughout the term. The quick responses and detailed feedback you gave us were extremely helpful in developing our communication skills. Thank you!
