Hula Hoop Check-In

Posted by in Assessment, Physical Education

In EDCP 320 (P.E. Curriculum), I worked collaboratively with my colleages to create a formative assessment activity.  We designed the assessment as part of a Bhangra dance lesson, a cultural activity with which many students may be unfamiliar, to increase confidence and engagement. In practice, this tool can be adapted to any subject and grade as a means to check-in with students and increase participation.

Pre-Assessment

At the beginning of the lesson, check in with the students to find out how they feel about learning Bhangra dancing, or the targeted material. Students use bean bags and hula hoops to represent their feelings before beginning the activities. There are three hoops representing students’ Danger, Learning, and Comfort zones. Students place a bean bag in the hoop that corresponds with their current feelings. Remind students that it is alright to feel a little apprehensive about learning something new and that this anxiety can actually help learning. This activity also serves to show students that they are not alone in their feelings, since there will likely be multiple bean bags in each hoop. This recognition that others share their feelings serves as a reminder to be respectful of diverse learning experiences.

 Post-Assessment

At the end of the lesson, revisit the hula hoop activity. At this time, students can conduct a self-assessment based on the targeted learning objectives and move their beanbag, if necessary. Students reflect on their participation, progress, and comfort during the previous learning task.
