Hi everyone!
My name is Kevin and I am entering my fifth year at UBC studying Biology. Throughout my first two years, I became interested in cell biology and decided to tailor my courses towards that field while incorporating courses related to immunology and viral and bacteria pathogenesis as I work towards a career in research. After my third year, I had the opportunity to enter the Science co-op program where I gained valuable experience working in a laboratory.
I worked at Kinexus, a biotechnology company that focuses on antibody production and proteomic research in search of finding potential drug targets for various cancers. During my time there, I was involved in several projects where I began to pursue a career in research. Now, I’ve returned to UBC this fall for my final year and opted to do a Directed Studies project based on a protein involved in, basically, maintaining the amount of fat our cells have to keep us healthy! That said, in the immediate future I will be applying to graduate schools and hopefully working towards a MSc in Experimental Medicine.
I will be writing a lot of applications, cover letters, resumes, and contacting potential references and professors, so here is where I believe this course will help me significantly.
Throughout the term, I’ve also expressed an interest in Education through my past experience as a tutor and teaching assistant, and student leadership where I’ve been involved as part of UBC Orientations and the UBC Science Undergraduate Society.
