All in all, ENGL 301 has been a challenging course because it required collaborative peer review and many revisions. I enjoyed this course immensely because it was an opportunity to critically evaluate my professional writing and develop my writing skills. Moreover, I received impactful feedback and comments from my team mates and professor, which allowed me to flourish in my writing.
My name is Katherine and welcome to my blog for ENGL 301. I’m a third-year student in the Bachelor of Computer Science second-degree program. I majored in Behavioural Neuroscience at UBC for my first degree. The purpose of my blog is to practice and strengthen my skills in technical writing and communication.
ENGL 301 is divided into four units:
- Unit 1: Principles, Practices, and People in English 301
- Unit 2: Designing a Report Proposal; Defining Terms with Audience in Mind
- Unit 3: Designing a Report Outline & Draft; Building your resume and job application skills
- Unit 4: Drafting the Formal Report; Peer Review of the Formal Report Draft
The course challenges students to work independently, in consultation with Professor Paterson, and collaboratively in writing teams. I have high expectations for this course because this is an excellent opportunity for students to be active participants and learners through collaboration and peer review.
Additionally, I am an Enrolment Services Project Assistant on the Financial Wellness team. I support Enrolment Services Advisors with financial outreach workshops and develop presentation material for different student groups. Recently I’ve been contributing to the Scholar’s Community Outreach Newsletters by conducting research and seeking opportunities for collaboration. Moreover, I am a Resident Advisor in UBC Housing where I work closely with a team of six Residence Advisors on community building initiatives for over 250 residents. It is imperative that I maintain consistent communication with other staff members via email and documentation in my residence area. Overall, I am excited to develop writing skills from ENGL 301 and apply them into my current roles and beyond!
Cheers,
Katherine
