Best Technology Uses

Initial Posting

Since I do not have math or science teaching background, I considered what I would find helpful in learning science or math or what I have observed within my high school. I have gained understanding of a variety of concepts using Khan Academy videos and practice materials and other video sources, like BBC Learn and Education Portal. I have seen students very engaged in digital frog dissection and other Gizmo activities. Simulations that allow the student to experiment would be effective experiences as well, like a flight simulator, Angry Birds or Touch Physics Life (one of many such Apps). Although a teacher could demonstrate a concept on a screen (digital whiteboard or tablet with projector) through direct transmission, it would be much more effective for students to experiment with the applications themselves. I definitely advocate a hands-on approach; however, I have a nagging feeling that there is a better way even than what I have described, but currently I do not have a clear picture of what this other learning encompasses. In considering the concept I chose for the misconceptions lesson, understanding the difference between weight and mass, a well-crafted video explanation with visuals would be very helpful . The lesson I found on the subject in the site Education Portal contained a video and a quiz that could cue the video to the appropriate segment if you needed review on an aspect on the tutorial.
