Kimberly Wagner

Current Teaching and Qualifications:

I currently teach in an alternate education program focused on re-engagement of students who have left high school early and the opportunity to try some college credits that will count towards their OSSD. I have my English Specialist (grades 7-12) and History qualifications (grades 7-10), but I also teach senior level college-bound Math to my students which has been a learning curve for me.

Profile:

Kimberly Wagner is the College Link program teacher for District School Board Ontario North East. In addition to teaching English for the last 16 years, she has also coordinated Student Success within her previous high school for a four year period. The student success initiative in which she is currently involved is an Alternative Education program that is focused on reengaging students who have left high school at a young age and would now like an opportunity to graduate with their diploma. Any references to ‘in my high school’ refers to my prior teaching assignment.

Introductions Posting:

Good evening. I live in the currently frozen land of Timmins, Ontario (Canada). We had the coldest week in a winter vacation in a long, long time this past week with -40 temperatures before the -50 or more wind chill. It was a good time to get cozy at home! (Claim to fame this week in South Porcupine, which is within Timmins’ city limits, a videoof a guy shooting boiled water from a super soaker and it turning to ice vapor. It went viral and made Canada AM.)

This is my 8th MET course in the program. I have completed all the core courses, as well as the Humanities, Text Technologies, and Media electives.

I am hoping to improve my practice of teaching Math to 18-21 year olds who have returned to an alternative high school program located in our local college. I teach all the high school courses they need, but a tutor comes in to help with the Math and Sciences. I do a great deal of teaching Math one-on-one using a piece of paper, so I would like to build some understanding, tools and resources in this area to better meet the needs of my students, and to potentially, in the future, use my learning in a position which oversees eLearning in our school board to improve the online Math courses.

I really like playing outside—hiking, running (jogging), skiing, snowshoeing, biking—all recreational with a few races thrown it to challenge myself. I am conflicted between my love for skiing and my love for HOT weather! In the College Link program referred to above, I am teacher,  guidance counselor, social convener, secretary, etc., and I love it!
