Photography
I am a storyteller. I am a strong believer in the idea that everyone has a story, and I am passionate about telling it. I often share anecdotes with friends and family. I develop elaborate stories that I later daydream about and expand. I channel memories and emotions into music. I tell stories in a number of ways but my favorite medium is pictures.
There’s a certain type of satisfaction that comes with taking a good picture. Sometimes, the picture simply looks good. Other times, it causes people to feel certain emotions. These are wonderful accomplishments but for me, the greatest satisfaction comes from snapping a picture that perfectly portrays a person or an event. People can appreciate the images themselves but more importantly, they can appreciate the memories of people and events that the images bring back. This is what makes photography gratifying for me.
About a month ago, I took this photo while watching the sunset with friends near the Museum of Anthropology. It’s a simple photo, but it’s one of my favorites because it perfectly captures the beauty of the moment.
Filmmaking
Along with taking pictures, I enjoy making videos. Last year, I started a youtube channel, and a year later, I couldn’t be happier about where I am. I love that I have the ability to share my experiences and adventures with others. I love that I can capture the beauty around me and show the world. I love that I’m able to express myself and my ideas. I love how I can spread a message and make a difference by doing something I enjoy.
I believe in the importance of using a platform to do these things and am proud that I’ve been able to do that through my videos.
In March, I filmed a video in which students described their current hopes and dreams for the world. It was meant to make people reflect on the current injustices and to inspire them. It is one of my favorite video projects, thus far.
Here it is!
For my Big Idea project, I will be looking at how Indigenous peoples are portrayed through film. I want to know how well films capture Indigenous peoples and their cultures. I want to know how well films tell their stories.
