Part of the emerging field of sound studies, I explore how attention to sound and listening\u00a0 challenges the dominance of the visual in how we understand and relate to our world. Inspired by Pauline Oliveros&#8217; call to practice &#8216;deep listening&#8217;,\u00a0 I am interested in how careful listening to the landscape\u00a0 invites us <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">to engage in more embodied <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">understanding of the ways in which we are all intertwined with the beauty and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">fragility of the natural world.\u00a0 Some current projects include:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0The Vancouver Soundscapes Project<\/h2>\n<p>with Siobhan Wittig McPhee and Piotr Wieczorek<\/p>\n<p>Every city has its own distinctive soundtrack. The hum of transformers, songs of sparrows, and moments of silence shape how we experience our urban environment. The call of an eagle might evoke connection to nature, while the intrusion of construction machinery signals rapid development and urban transformation. Can we discern the city&#8217;s economic, social, and ecological health through its acoustic patterns? We created a soundscape of the intertwining of community livelihoods and sacred water, entitled Sounds of Khumbu, for the opening celebrations of the Community Digital Heritage Studio (CODHers) in October 2023.<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-356-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/koppes\/files\/2024\/01\/Final_Sounds-of-Khumbu_Oct-4_2023.m4a?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/koppes\/files\/2024\/01\/Final_Sounds-of-Khumbu_Oct-4_2023.m4a\">https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/koppes\/files\/2024\/01\/Final_Sounds-of-Khumbu_Oct-4_2023.m4a<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Sound stories of the Fraser River<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In the summer of 2022, I captured the acoustic journey of the Fraser River from its headwaters in the Canadian Rockies to its outlet along the working banks of Vancouver and Richmond. Water Rhythms is a story about the dualism of water, the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">universal connector of the Earth and its humans. It is also<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0an intergenerational story of the rapid depletion of our <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">freshwater sources worldwide.<\/span> As glaciers and ice sheets,\u00a0 the world&#8217;s water towers holding 99% of the freshwater on Earth, shrink and disappear in response to climate change, t<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">hese water rhythms are also shifting and fading from view.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-viewer text-viewer-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">We have been sonically mapping changes in glacier <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">runoff from the mountains to the ocean, in some <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">of the world\u2019s most important water towers: the Coast Mountains of the Pacific <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Northwest, the Greenland Ice Sheet, and the Indian <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Himalayas. Through compositions created from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">field recordings taken both above and below the ice and the water, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">including the sounds and music of the people who live along the waterways, we are listening to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">the sounds of climate change.
