What am I Like?
I like to think that I have a light sense of humor and like to keep a healthy attitude about me. Have been heavily involved in sports my whole life and enjoy keeping myself active and healthy. My passion lies in teaching PE and motivating students in sport and activity.
A Little Bit About Me
My name is Tanner Kozak and I grew up in the small, but lovely town of Vernon B.C. I loved its blazing hot summers where I could spend the day out at one of the many lakes it has to offer. The fall and winter months were also full of fun times for me with the infinite opportunity for hikes, snowboarding, and other activities. Having come from such a vibrant community has really helped in developing my active lifestyle.
With that said, sports were a large part of my life growing up, in particular volleyball became the genetic make up of my teen years while going through highschool. Eventually, I was able to continue my career in volleyball once I was ready to begin my university career in Human Kinetics at the University of British Columbia. A routine part of our varsity season at UBC was to run youth sports camps during late August each summer, and it was here that I first discovered an interest in teaching others. I knew that the feeling that I got while helping guide a child to discovering something new that they never known before was a feeling that I wanted to strive towards as much as possible.
My dad, who is also a teacher, would have to be one of my biggest inspirations as well. Upon having the most unfortunate circumstance of having to go to the exact highschool that he taught at it was during my time there that I would experience something that would later contribute to my aspirations of being a teacher. During a school day, I would often have other students come up to me in the halls during breaks and tell me how much they love having my dad as a teacher. Don’t get me wrong there were also some complaints and angry comments about my dad as well, but the good vastly outweighed the bad. For a short while these comments didn’t really mean anything to me, all I knew was that a fair amount of people in the school are quite familiar with my dad. Nevertheless a few years down the road when contemplating if teaching was a direction that I wanted to take my career in, I often thought back to all those awesome comments from students that were about my dad. I began to want to be like that teacher that either brightens a student’s day or is friendly and caring towards each student he sees.
After completing my final elective courses during the 2012-2013 winter session at UBC Okanagan, I decided to apply to attend UBC Vancouver to acquire a Bachelors in Education. And thus began my journey full of ups and downs, an abundance of slips and falls. However along with these trials and tribulations, there were in fact many discoveries and enlightening moments that I came across.
