The Anonymous Web

I came across this blog post The Anonymous Web on Radical Trust: a marketing blog website, found from a list of the top 50 Canadian blogs (through google).

This specific article struck me as its main topic was targeted towards my generation of social media users.

The topic: Anonymity on the internet.

Will our present Facebook profiles and childish endeavours exploit our future job advances?

I have often discussed with both my friends and parents the importance of screening what I choose to update to my Facebook profile.  Not only for the sake of personal privacy but also for thinking ahead into my future;  knowing that any potential boss could google my name and see pictures that were supposedly just a good time back when I as 19, but could potentially be the cause of a loss of job when I am 25.

The article notes a decrease or discontinue in facebook users; 1 in 5 as of April 2010.  This of course may be because many users have begun to change their names or use aliases in order to maintain privacy.

Should our personal lives be separate from our work?

I strongly believe yes, but Facebook has allowed our integrity to be up for interpretation.

When debating between two potential employees it is easiest for employers to google both names to learn more about each candidate.  You could probably learn more about a person from fifteen minutes on their facebook page, then through a forty-five minute face-to-face interview.

The problem, however, is that someones personal life as displayed on Facebook may not reasonably reflect their worth ethic.  Sadly, this may not matter as many hiring decisions must be made quickly and an innaporpriate Facebook profile may lead to a quick cut in the real world.

Is Facebook really worth it?

What do you think?
