Lately, I have noticed a surplus of my classmates blogs speaking out on the use of sex in advertisements. Mostly, these posts have been targeting the actual company’s and their corresponding products and ads. Steven Brewer, however, had one of the first blogs I saw that actually targeted a specific group of women who were posing in these ads: professional athletes; in his post Female Atheletes AKA Sex Symbols .
I have to agree with Steven that, “male endorsement is more often based on accomplishment, female endorsement is unofficially mandated to be based on sex appeal.”
More often than not, any somewhat successful female athlete who is generally more attractive than is talented, will be offered some sort of modeling/endorsement deal that will improve her overall celebrity tenfold.
Steven named several female athletes in his blog but I would also like to add Anna Kournikova(professional tennis player), who I had never heard of athletics wise, but discovered who she was through an Enrique Iglesias music video!
I do not personally care that these ladies choose to expand their celebrity through the use of their beauty, however, I feel sorry for them that they cannot find a way to become more well-known through talent in their sport.
Today’s society allows for such celebrity sex appeal to be endorsed. But you know what, I would rather see photos of somewhat successful female athletes with hot bods posing half nude because at least they work hard through sport to look that hot, as oppossed to stick thin models who eat celery sticks all day. So far that, I still see them as positive role models.
HOT!
NOT!
