Hi Natalie!

I like the scenario that was generated for you to respond to:

  • Issues relate to court system
  • Elicits feelings of dread
  • A few years into the future
  • A society which has come apart
  • About a building

I’m guessing, like me, you also looked at a few scenarios before you chose the one that spoke to you the most. You chose a good one to write about. You set the scene really well — “survival of the fittest” says it all.

I got a clear sense of an eery place, reminiscent of Gotham City in Batman’s The Dark Night at its worst. I can sense the dreariness and a grey sky with misty thick rain falling before the start of winter. I can’t imagine using the skytrains, or for that matter, leaving my home in this future; it elicits a very uneasy feeling. One gets a sense of what it could be like to live within a dictatorship where law and order is unbalanced and non-existent for regular citizens.

In reality ;), I’ve been to Vancouver many times, so I’m able to picture the landscape and the downtown core. I’m wondering, Natalie, if there’s a specific building or a landmark in Vancouver that you feel represents Vancouver? For example, maybe some place you think of when traveling outside of Vancouver, or somewhere you like to bring friends/family to when they’re visiting you in Vancouver. Is there something this building/landmark could feature in your scenario?

Your narrative follows the generated scenario well and makes the bleakness palpable. It has me wondering what horrible circumstances could possibly cause the fall of this speculative future Vancouver just a few years in the future. I looked up online the top issues that are currently concerning Vancouverites in Metro Vancouver. An article in the online news source Daily Hive came back with the top 3 issues: 1) affordable housing (38%), homelessness (33%), and crime/public safety (25%) (Chan, 2022).

Thank you for your post, Natalie!
