Purpose

The following are my list of reasons for adding the various images and animated files to my LMS site.

  • Make LMS course pages interesting and colourful, too many text based pages can be uninspiring and ‘boring’
  • Splash Page image (Smart_Board.jpg) conveys idea that the site is about using a Smart Board in Math Class
  • The Mountains5642.jpg file was inserted into a specific quiz question to compliment the text. This strategy may heighten the senses (multimedia) of students, helping them understand the question more thoroughly.
  • Both the 2Cars.jpg and Integer_Line.jpg files are imbedded into separate quiz questions. The images are actually integral to each question, in that they need to be interpreted properly for the user to answer the questions accurately.
  • Igneous_Rock, Metamorphic_Rock.gif, and eruptionAnim.gif files are all animated in that they appear to be a short movie that repeats indefinitely. These files are also inserted into different quiz questions to help the user answer each question correctly. Both, the Igneous_Rock and Metamorphic_Rock.gif files show the user how lava penetrates the differing layers of rock. These animated images are subtle hints to assist learners find the correct response.

Some of my images came from Photobucket. I have an account with this service. I created the integer file myself, using photoshop. There was no indication on the website of how to contact the owner of the Mountains5642.jpg file for permission to use this image. For the Igneous_Rock, Metamorphic_Rock.gif, animated files, I contacted the owner of the site, which was last updated on January 29, 1999, I never received a response from the email address listed on the web site.

Technologies required to prepare it for your LMS course site, including hardware and software

I used a computer and Microsoft Word software to develop an image for my LMS site. An internet connection and a web browser were needed to navigate to specific web site’s to download various images/animated images. I needed to register for a Photobucket account, so I could obtain images for free from this service. I used the built-in Moodle upload feature to add my files to the Moodle (UBC) server.

Estimated time to create or prep

It took me approximately 45 minutes to search and copy my selected LMS files to my hard disk. I spent 35 minutes creating the Integer_Line.jpg file in the draw portion of Microsoft Word. I had difficulty adding my images to my LMS pages because I was using the Safari web browser. I spent approximately 55 minutes trying to attach these files with no success. Perhaps, working late had something to do with my diminished foresight, as I finally realized that the editor was missing when I used Safari. Mounting my LMS site through the Firefox web browser solved my editor problems, adding images to the LMS pages proceeded smoothly after that.

Associated costs (state if zero)

I incurred no expenses in obtaining or making my files/images. The only expense is the monthly connection fee that I am charged to have my high-speed connection to the Internet.

Purpose

The purpose of linking users from my LMS site to the Grade 5/7 ‘Math Makes Sense’ online Professional Guide is to have all the grade 5/7 math resources for this textbook available to teachers digitally. This resource also exists on a DVD and in print form (without the videos). I felt that if teachers had all the necessary resources to work through the LMS course in a digital form, then their course experience would be more fruitful and organized. Teachers have the license in my district to adapt blackline masters to suit their classroom needs. Having these resources in digital form permits these adaptations. Finally, the proguide format, is compatible with whiteboard devices like the SMART Board. This integration will make it much easier for teachers to present the information to students using the SMART Board if compatibility issues are already taken care of.

Source (new or where it came from originally)

This online resource is located on the Pearson Education Canada web site. On their web site, each Professional Guide as it’s called, is a sampler only. This resource also comes on a DVD for each grade with a teacher’s resource manual as well. Our school purchased the Math Makes sense textbook (30 per class) with DVD, and online teachers resource last year for grades k-through 7. I do not possess the online code at this time, it is presently at the school. If I had it, I could unlock the entire online guide for teachers. I will do this in September 2009, prior to the beginning of the school year.

Copyright clearance requirements (if not new)

The online and print resources are available to all teachers within the school for copying for classroom purposes. Teachers can alter the digital blackline masters for their own classroom purposes if need be. Teachers can also add and delete specific questions to the pre-made unit quizzes and tests.

Technologies Required to Prepare it for your LMS Course Site, including Hardware and Software

I used a web browser (Firefox) on my laptop to travel to the Pearson web site that contained the movie URL’s. I then copied each URL onto an area in my LMS page that would make the online resource accessible for viewing. Again, a high-speed internet connection would be preferable when viewing movies. Users need to have installed the Adobe Flash Player to be able to view the flash movie within their browser. Adobe has available many different versions of the Flash Player depending on the user’s operating system (Windows XP, Vista, Mac OS, Linux).

Estimated time to create or prep

It only took approximately 4 minutes to find the online links (URL’s) that contained the flash movies. Adding the links to each LMS page took approximately 2 minutes to complete.

Associated costs (state if zero)

The cost of linking the flash movie to my LMS was free. As stated earlier, the Math Makes Sense textbook for students and teacher resources were purchased in the 2007-2008 calendar year.
