PS4: Hit or Miss?

The recent release of the Playstation 4, on November 15, 2013, has marked the first console Sony has released in 7 years (the last being the Playstation 3). Sony projects to sell 5 million units by the end of their fiscal year (which is March). With the Playstation 3, Sony managed to sell approximately 3.5 million units by that same time, 7 years ago, it does not seem unreasonable to have that projection. Also, with the constant competition between Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony, we expect to see each successive video game console generation boast a wider variety of upgrades from their predecessors and, of course, attract its many loyal followers to continue purchasing their products.

Since the video gaming industry is so massive, and Sony’s fan base is the majority of the video gaming fanatics, we should continue to see a rise in success for Sony’s gaming consoles. As is for many things in life though, only time will tell how Sony does.

  2. Microsoft is slowly taking over the market

The video-game console business has hosted a big-time rivalry for close to two decades. Who’s the leader today? Microsoft’s XBOX.

Sales forecasts show great success for all consoles. It’s the companies’ sales of previous years that will most likely predict their success in their upcoming releases. Nintendo’s Wii was the true victor selling 20.3 million units more than their competitors, however their release of the Wii U did not meet the expectations of consumers and has not sold as many as they thought they would – leaving us with Sony and Microsoft on the run for the best selling console.

Quoting the article ‘Microsoft versus Sony versus Nintendo. Who wins?’ – “in July, the company [(Microsoft)] reported that the Xbox 360 captured 47% of all U.S. hardware sales in June, making it the 16th consecutive month it was able to reach 40% or higher.” The video-game market has shown that consumers are very loyal to console manufacturers, unless they truly innovate. Although consoles have really improved for their new generation, this is not the case.

Based on statistics of sales in past years and consumers’ disappointment with Nintendo’s new console, i disagree on the PS4 “being a hit” in comparison to Microsoft’s promising future.

    • You can certainly not deny statistics, but I believe that the U.S. is only one of many markets in the world, albeit being one of the largest ones.

Also, I do agree that Nintendo’s new console has left great disappointment for its consumers, myself included, but that does not mean PS4 will not be a hit. I do not see the Playstation losing its consumer base as quickly and drastically as Nintendo has. To reiterate my original point, I believe the PS4 will be a hit much more than a miss. And I believe the Xbox will continue to become a formidable competitor. This generation’s gamers mainly focus on first person shooters, a staple to the Xbox console, and has also become popular with the Playstation, but the Playstation is more renown for the variety of games and its “flawless” HD graphics.

It’s undeniable that both the Playstation and the Xbox will stay competitive with each other for quite some time, and they should both see success in the next few years, barring any major malfunctions in their systems.
