UBC Farm Visit 3: Organics – A Healthy Soil Ecosystem

Today at the UBC Farm we learned about healthy soil. We identified the major components of soil including air, water, minerals, humus and living organisms. We learned how to care for soil by composting our garden waste and using paper and leaf mulch to protect the soil during the winter. We identified collaborators and competitors  in the garden and made wire worm traps with potatoes to protect our spring crops. The kitchen crew made delicious pumpkin muffins from pumpkins grown on the farm.

UBC Farm Visit 2: Nature’s Cycles

Today at the UBC Farm we learned the importance of nature’s cycles. This involved identifying the life cycles of the natural world like plant and animal cycles and the role of compost. We learned the importance of seed saving. We collected seeds from mature plants and prepared them to be dried and saved to be eaten or replanted. We learned how and why we compost and practiced using garden tools safely. The chefs made some delicious root vegetable fritters which we harvested from our garden beds. Here are some pictures and comments from the reporters who captured the activities of the day:
