Tracing guides us to explicitly outline the compositional techniques of other designers, allowing for a deeper understanding of those techniques and, hopefully, how they may apply to our own work. The goal here is to become familiar enough with the various visual tools we encounter in the works of others that, after a time, we can begin to immediately recognize them without using tracing. This results in an ability to quickly analyze and critique works (including our own), learn from them efficiently, and effectively implement tools and techniques from others in our own work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Desired outcomes: the art of critique<\/p>\n<p>Methods: visual analysis<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>materials<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 landscape drawings\/renders you would like to analyze, digital or printed (I used illustrations by the architect Luc Schuiten)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(If printed) Trace paper, various drawing media<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(If digital) Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk Sketchbook, or similar<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>instructions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For each of the images, use trace paper or digital software to trace on top<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On separate layers, analyze at minimum:<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visual hierarchy (trace the path your eye follows in the image)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">location of major visual elements (grid)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shape and composition of major visual elements (massing)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perspective (1-point, 2-point, or 3 point perspective; location of vanishing points)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Light and shadow (light source location, shadow trajectories)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any other techniques or elements you are interested in<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>reflection questions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What application might this type of visual analysis have in your everyday design practice?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which analysis layers proved the most surprising?
