Flower/cone/fruit description(s): Flowers are contained in drooping, brownish male catkins (2-3″ long) and insignificant, smaller, upright, greenish female catkins, both of which appear in spring on the same tree.

Limitations:  tolerates drier soils. Adapts well to heavy clay soils and will tolerate poor drainage. Avoid pruning in spring when the sap is running.

Suitable uses:  Excellent (as specimen or in small groups) for lawns, parks, and commercial properties and, in particular, for wet soils along ponds or streams or in low spots.

Leaf arrangement:  Leaves (to 7” across) have five sharply pointed lobes and resemble those of sugar maple. Leaf stems exude a milky sap when cut. ‘Crimson King’ is a red-leaved cultivar which is noted for its rich maroon leaves that last throughout the summer

Flower/cone/fruit description(s): Small yellow flowers in erect clusters (corymbs) appear in spring before the foliage. Flowers give way to purple samaras (to 2” long) with horizontally spreading wings.

Limitations:  Tolerant of a wide range of soils. Tolerant of heat and drought.

Fall colour:  Fall color is unremarkable.

Suitable uses:  Shade tree. Although once widely planted as a street tree, this use is not generally recommended in many areas now.
